Economy of the trip:
Most places in India are very cheap for an international tourist.
Things you shouldn’t miss in India:
One thing you should never miss in India is the Taj Mahal! Take a train ride along the konkan coast in the west from Mumbai to Goa during the monsoon. Enjoy the beaches in Goa/Gokarna. Go to the rainest place on earth in Cherrapunjee. Enjoy the beauty of the Himalayas in Ladakh. Stay in a houseboat in Alleppy in the south or Dal lake, Kashmir in the north. If on a spiritual tour of India, check out Varanasi and Dharamsala too.
Overall:
India is a true third world nation. Tourists will find it a little difficult to move around compared to other tourist friendly countries. However, if you are the adventurous one, a backpacking around India will be an experience you will cherish for a lifetime. India will surely not disappoint you in terms of the scenic beauty and travel experiences.
